The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) is advancing work on new EMU maintenance facilities at Bhivpuri and Vangaon under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-IIIA (MUTP-IIIA), as part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure for Mumbai’s expanding suburban railway network.
The programme involves constructing new EMU carsheds at both locations while upgrading existing maintenance facilities to accommodate the city’s growing suburban train fleet.
At Bhivpuri, the project has progressed following the acquisition of the entire 45.24 hectares required for the proposed carshed. The land comprises 42.28 hectares of private property and 2.96 hectares belonging to the government.
MRVC awarded a contract in August 2025 for several key works at the site, including land development, bridge extensions, construction of boundary walls, drainage systems and internal roads. Around 7.16 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has already been completed.
Drone mapping and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) surveys have also been carried out, along with geotechnical investigations. Construction of retaining walls is currently underway. Meanwhile, approvals for the General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) of bridges and the Carshed Engineering Scale Plan (ESP) are being processed.
The Vangaon EMU Carshed is also moving forward and is expected to require approximately 43.68 hectares of land. Acquisition of the entire 3.64 hectares of private land has progressed, with compensation deposited for distribution among affected landowners. The remaining requirement comprises forest land.
The project received Stage-I ‘In-Principle’ forest clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in February 2026. MRVC is currently pursuing Stage-II forest clearance.

The Bhivpuri and Vangaon facilities form part of MRVC’s broader plan to expand and modernise suburban railway maintenance infrastructure. Alongside upgrades to existing carsheds, the projects are expected to provide additional capacity for maintaining the future rolling stock fleet and support the continued expansion of Mumbai’s suburban rail network under MUTP-IIIA.
