The Maharashtra government has sanctioned around Rs 40 crore for development works in slum areas of Dahisar, Borivali and Kandivali, with the funding aimed at improving basic civic infrastructure and living conditions for residents.
The allocation will support a range of essential works, including the improvement of internal roads and passages, drainage and gutter networks, public toilets, paver blocks and other civic facilities in densely populated settlements.
The investment assumes added importance in Mumbai’s western suburbs, where several large slum pockets continue to face challenges related to inadequate sanitation, damaged roads, poor drainage and limited public amenities. During the monsoon, these problems can worsen as heavy rainfall often results in waterlogging and overflowing drains, affecting daily life for residents.
The government funding is being released through various development schemes, with local development allocations being utilised for infrastructure improvements in the respective areas.
The sanctioned amount is expected to benefit thousands of residents by addressing some of the long-standing deficiencies in basic civic services. Better drainage systems and sanitation facilities could particularly help reduce monsoon-related difficulties in vulnerable settlements.
However, the effectiveness of the initiative will depend largely on how quickly the approved projects are implemented. Residents in several parts of Mumbai have often complained about delays in civic works, making regular monitoring and timely execution crucial for ensuring that the allocated funds translate into visible improvements.
