The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), popularly known as Nhava Sheva, has strengthened its position on the global maritime map, climbing to the 21st spot among the world’s top 30 container ports in the first half of 2026.
According to the latest Alphaliner review, JNPA recorded a 13.6% increase in container throughput during H1 2026, the highest growth rate among the world’s top 30 container ports. The port had ranked 28th in 2025, meaning it has moved up seven positions globally.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the achievement in a social media post, describing JNPA as one of the fastest-growing container ports globally. The Ministry also said the performance reflects India’s expanding maritime capabilities and growing importance in global logistics.
The latest ranking comes amid continued efforts to improve cargo handling, vessel operations, evacuation systems and multimodal connectivity at JNPA. The port also maintained cargo movement during global trade disruptions in the first half of the year, according to the port authority.
JNPA handled about 2.99 million TEUs of containers between April and July 2026, marking a 14.37% increase over the corresponding period of the previous year. Its total cargo throughput during the period stood at 36.62 million tonnes, up 11.95%.
The port currently has an annual container-handling capacity of around 10.1 million TEUs and is working towards expanding this capacity to approximately 12 million TEUs in the coming years.
The latest global ranking further highlights JNPA’s growing role as a key gateway for India’s international trade and strengthens Mumbai’s position within the country’s expanding maritime and logistics network.
