Two prominent parks in Powai: Atal Bihari Vajpayee Park and Pramod Mahajan Van Park, are set to undergo extensive repair and beautification work as the civic administration moves to upgrade their ageing infrastructure.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has selected A Square Realty to undertake redevelopment and renovation work at both parks. The combined project is estimated to cost ₹5.65 crore.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Park has reportedly been awaiting improvements for several months. Its protective walls, pathways and main entrance have deteriorated and require repairs. The proposed work will include construction of a gazebo, refurbishment of existing seating areas, renovation of toilets and pump rooms, and installation of new play equipment for children and exercise facilities.
The project will also cover painting, electrical upgrades and landscaping to improve the overall appearance and usability of the garden.
Similar repair and beautification work has been planned for Pramod Mahajan Van Park in Powai. Its damaged protective walls, footpaths and entrance will be repaired, while the existing gazebo will undergo restoration and painting.
The proposed works also include repairs to steps, the pool and waterfall, security room and meter room. Electrical improvements and landscaping are also part of the redevelopment plan.
The selection of a private contractor for both projects marks a shift from the earlier practice, under which such maintenance activities were generally undertaken through agencies associated with the civic garden department.
The growing participation of private developers and companies in civic park improvement projects indicates increasing interest in undertaking municipal beautification and maintenance contracts.
The redevelopment is expected to improve basic facilities, safety and recreational infrastructure at the two Powai parks. Once completed, the upgraded spaces could provide residents with better-maintained areas for leisure, exercise and community activities.
The project will also focus on improving the overall landscape and appearance of the parks while addressing long-pending structural and maintenance issues.
