With redevelopment and rehabilitation issues continuing to trouble residents across Mumbai, Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Sachin Ahir on September 2nd, Wednesday, reviewed a series of long-pending matters before the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), including the BDD chawl redevelopment project.
The meeting at Vidhan Bhavan focused on grievances raised by housing societies and residents over redevelopment, rehabilitation, allotment of homes and alternative accommodation. Ahir directed MHADA officials to examine the pending complaints and take steps to resolve them at the earliest.
The BDD chawl redevelopment project figured prominently in the discussions, with issues relating to the allotment of rehabilitation homes through the lottery system being taken up. Concerns raised by families from the Worli BDD Chawls seeking alternative accommodation were also discussed, along with issues faced by residents staying in transit camps.
A proposal to provide alternative flats to 10 residents of Saraswati Building in Lower Parel was among the other matters reviewed. Representations submitted by Tanwade and 30 other residents of Shivshakti Park on N.M. Joshi Marg were also considered.
The meeting also took up a proposal to include Geetanjali Building in Byculla in a cluster of five MHADA buildings for redevelopment. Rehabilitation-related concerns of HIG and LIG residents of the SVP Nagar Society and a proposal to grant permanent ownership rights to families of Gharakul Society in Tagore Nagar were also discussed.
Several other stalled redevelopment matters, including those concerning Abhyudaya Nagar, Rustom Tadiwala Chawl and Shahsadan Society, came under review.
MHADA Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer Sanjeev Jaiswal, Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board Chief Officer Milind Shambharkar, Mumbai Board Chief Officer Milind Borikar, senior MHADA officials and representatives of the concerned housing societies attended the meeting.
The review assumes significance as residents across Mumbai continue to seek faster action on redevelopment, rehabilitation and housing-related grievances.
