Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has set a key delivery milestone for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, with the state pushing to move the long-delayed transformation of the central Mumbai neighbourhood from planning to actual housing delivery.
Speaking at the NAREDCO Maharashtra Real Estate & Infrastructure Investors’ Summit in Mumbai on Thursday, Fadnavis said he wants the first batch of 10,000 rehabilitation homes to be ready by January 2029. He also expressed his intention to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi hand over the keys to the beneficiaries at the time.
Fadnavis said he had declined an invitation to perform the project’s groundbreaking ceremony, stating that his focus was on seeing homes delivered to eligible Dharavi residents.
The redevelopment covers around 621 acres and is expected to bring large-scale changes to one of Mumbai’s most densely populated and strategically located areas. Eligible residents are to receive rehabilitation homes as part of the project, while the wider redevelopment is expected to include commercial and other urban uses.
The announcement comes amid the Maharashtra government’s broader push for large-scale redevelopment across Mumbai. Fadnavis said the state is targeting a slum-free Mumbai over the next 10 years through cluster redevelopment, including the redevelopment of older settlements and MHADA colonies.
The government is also looking at redeveloping BEST depot land through mixed-use projects, combining residential and commercial spaces with public amenities.
For Mumbai’s real estate market, the Dharavi project is significant for its scale and location, with redevelopment expected to unlock a large urban precinct while creating new rehabilitation housing and supporting infrastructure.
