Parking for devotees heading towards Lalbaug and Parel during Ganeshotsav is expected to become easier this year, with the Bombay Port Trust (BPT) making a land parcel at Cotton Green available as a temporary parking facility for nearly 1,200 vehicles.
The initiative has been taken after a request from the Mumbai Traffic Police, which sought additional parking capacity to manage the heavy traffic generated during the 10-day festival. Preparatory work at the site includes levelling the land and installing electrical facilities to make the premises suitable for use during evening and late-night darshan hours.
The Lalbaug-Parel belt attracts an estimated 1.25 crore to over 1.5 crore visitors during Ganeshotsav, with crowds increasing substantially on weekends and immersion days. A large number of devotees arrive by private vehicles, often adding to traffic as motorists search for parking around popular pandals.
“We had requested BPT to make the land available for parking, and they accepted our request. Electrification work is currently underway at Cotton Green. During Ganeshotsav, the parking facility, with a capacity of around 1,200 vehicles, will be available for devotees travelling to Lalbaug and Parel. We will also install directional signboards to guide motorists to the parking area,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyanarayan Choudhary told Mirror.
43 Parking Facilities Added to Google
Alongside the temporary Cotton Green facility, the Mumbai Traffic Police has provided Google with information on 43 authorised pay-and-park locations that were previously not easily searchable on its mapping and search platforms.
