The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sanctioned Rs 41.83 crore for a comprehensive slope-stabilisation project at Malabar Hill, aimed at reducing the risk of landslides, rockfalls and soil erosion in vulnerable sections of the hillside.
The decision follows a major tree collapse in the area earlier this year, which brought renewed attention to the stability of the slopes surrounding the Malabar Hill elevated skywalk and nearby residential areas.
Engineering Measures to Strengthen Slopes
The proposed work will target sections identified as vulnerable to erosion and slope failure, particularly areas where heavy rainfall, ageing vegetation and natural weathering may weaken the terrain.
Under the project, the civic body plans to introduce specialised engineering measures to reinforce unstable portions of the hillside. These interventions are intended to contain loose soil and rocks, minimise erosion and improve the overall stability of the slopes.
The measures are particularly important during Mumbai’s monsoon season, when prolonged and intense rainfall can increase water pressure within soil layers and place additional stress on natural rock faces.
Tree Collapse Highlights Safety Concerns
The need for preventive work gained urgency after a large tree fell in the Malabar Hill area nearly three months ago, damaging surrounding infrastructure and raising questions about the condition of the hillside.
Malabar Hill is known for its dense vegetation and elevated landscape. However, the combination of ageing trees, continuous weathering and heavy rainfall can contribute to instability over time.
Rather than waiting for further incidents, the BMC’s latest project is focused on strengthening vulnerable sections in advance and reducing dependence on emergency repairs after slope failures occur.
Skywalk Adds to Need for Safety
The Malabar Hill skywalk, which became operational about a year ago, has attracted increased pedestrian activity in the area. With greater public footfall, ensuring the stability of the adjoining slopes has become more important.
The stabilisation project is expected to protect the skywalk, pedestrian movement and nearby infrastructure while improving the long-term resilience of the hillside.
Protecting a High-Value Residential Area
Malabar Hill includes prominent residential properties as well as several official government residences, making slope safety an important concern for both public infrastructure and private surroundings.
The approved investment is expected to help protect built-up areas while also limiting damage to environmentally sensitive sections of the hill.
The project forms part of the BMC’s broader focus on strengthening Mumbai’s resilience to monsoon-related hazards and climate-linked risks. Preventive slope engineering can help reduce the likelihood of landslides and rockfalls while enabling the civic body to undertake regular maintenance before conditions become critical.
