Mumbai’s first flyover integrated with a Metro corridor is progressing towards phased commissioning, with the initial section targeted for completion by December 2026 and the remaining stretch expected to open by May 2027.
The proposed 5.08-km elevated corridor will connect New Link Road near Infinity Mall in Andheri West with Poonam Nagar on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). The project is expected to strengthen east-west connectivity and help address traffic bottlenecks along some of Mumbai’s busy arterial routes.
Double-Decker Structure Along Metro 6
The flyover was originally proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). As its alignment overlaps with Metro Line 6, the remaining construction has been entrusted to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Around 0.93 km of the total flyover length has already been completed by the BMC.
The remaining work is being undertaken in two sections. The first portion, measuring approximately 2.58 km, is being constructed as a double-decker structure carrying both the road flyover and Metro Line 6. This component has achieved around 80% physical progress.
The second section, covering about 1.58 km, consists of a single-level flyover and ramps. It also features a 120-metre cable-stayed bridge that will cross the Western Express Highway and the operational Metro Line 7. This section has recorded around 58.41% progress.
Two-Phase Opening Planned
Under the current project schedule, the first phase will connect Infinity Mall to JVLR Junction and is targeted for completion by December 2026.
The second phase, extending from JVLR Junction to Poonam Nagar, is expected to be completed by May 2027. This portion will include the cable-stayed bridge and associated ramps.
Expected to Improve East-West Movement
Once fully operational, the integrated elevated corridor is expected to provide a more continuous link between Mumbai’s western and eastern neighbourhoods.
The project is also intended to ease congestion around Infinity Mall Junction, SV Road Junction and the JVLR junction on the Western Express Highway. By creating separate elevated levels for different traffic movements, the corridor is expected to reduce conflicts between local and through traffic.
Officials expect the infrastructure to support smoother movement along JVLR and improve travel between Link Road, SV Road and the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
The project’s integration with Metro Line 6 is also intended to demonstrate how road and mass-transit infrastructure can be developed within a shared elevated corridor, making better use of limited space in a densely built-up part of Mumbai.
With construction advancing on both sections, the project is moving towards its planned phased opening in 2026 and 2027.
