The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has ordered immediate strengthening of safety arrangements along the under-construction Metro Line 9 following a series of accidents involving workers and members of the public.
Officials said similar safety measures will also be extended to Metro Line 4 and other ongoing Metro projects to ensure stricter compliance at construction sites.
The latest action followed an incident on September 20, when a 23-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after a cement block reportedly fell on him from an elevated construction site at Kashimira.
MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee subsequently held a meeting with senior officials, contractors and general consultants associated with Line 9. The teams were instructed to follow prescribed safety procedures strictly and immediately correct shortcomings identified at work sites.
Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Ashwini Joshi later inspected several Line 9 construction locations to assess barricading and other protective arrangements.
“At some locations, she was dissatisfied with the condition of barricades and directed the contractor to immediately strengthen and secure them. This was at sites adjoining roads with heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement,” said the MMRDA official.
The latest measures come after several earlier incidents along the corridor. Last month, granite floor stones reportedly fell from an under-construction Metro 9 station at Medetiya Nagar, damaging the tyres of a passing school van.
In November 2025, a site supervisor died after falling from the under-construction Sai Baba Nagar station in Mira Road. Two months earlier, a 30-kg iron jack reportedly became detached from a girder during a lowering operation near Golden Nest, landing on a road that was only lightly barricaded.
Safety concerns have also intensified around Metro Line 4. Last week, a 54-year-old delivery worker was killed after an iron barricade at the Metro 4 construction site on LBS Marg in Vikhroli fell onto his moving two-wheeler.
Days earlier, two workers died at a Wadala Metro 4 site after an iron staging platform collapsed while they were descending from the first floor.
The MMRDA’s latest directive places greater emphasis on barricading, site inspections and compliance with safety protocols across active Metro construction zones.
