The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has expanded cricketing facilities at the historic Azad Maidan with the opening of eight newly prepared pitches, in a move aimed at creating better playing opportunities for local cricketers.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik formally inaugurated the pitches on Sunday, September 27, marking another effort by the association to improve the infrastructure available to MCA-affiliated clubs and players. Azad Maidan has long been an important training and competition ground for Mumbai’s cricketing community and has played a role in developing several generations of players.
Alongside the new pitches, the MCA has supplied essential equipment to the respective plot holders to assist with the upkeep of the grounds. The resources include heavy rollers, grass-cutting machines and tents, which are expected to support regular maintenance and improve the condition of the playing areas.
Speaking at the inauguration, Naik said: “Azad Maidan has been one of the pillars of Mumbai cricket and has produced generations of outstanding cricketers. The opening of these eight newly prepared pitches is another step towards providing better facilities and playing opportunities to our cricketers.
“Our focus is to continuously strengthen grassroots cricket and upgrade Mumbai’s historic maidans. Better infrastructure at the grassroots level will help us nurture the next generation of Mumbai and Indian cricketers.”
Naik also acknowledged the support extended by the Maharashtra government in facilitating the handover process associated with the pitches. He credited the MCA Apex Council for its proactive role in assisting maidan clubs and contributing to efforts to improve grassroots cricket facilities.
The latest development adds to the MCA’s broader focus on upgrading Mumbai’s traditional cricket grounds while ensuring that young and emerging players have access to better-maintained facilities. With Azad Maidan remaining a key part of the city’s cricket ecosystem, the new pitches are expected to provide additional opportunities for training and competitive matches.
