Construction of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) Metro Line 12, connecting Kalyan-Dombivli with Taloja, has crossed the halfway mark, with 53.87% of the project completed in about two and a half years.
Work on the corridor began in March 2024, and MMRDA is now aiming to finish the remaining construction and commission the line by May 2028. Once operational, the elevated route is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Kalyan-Dombivli and Taloja, with travel time between the two areas projected to fall by around 45 minutes.
Metro Line 12 is planned as an extension of the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 towards Navi Mumbai. The 23.576-km elevated corridor will have 19 stations, covering important residential, industrial and developing areas between Kalyan and Taloja.
The stations planned along the route are Kalyan, APM Kalyan, Ganesh Nagar, Pisavali Gaon, Golavali, Dombivli MIDC, Sagav, Sonarpada, Manpada, Hedutne, Kolegaon, Nilje Gaon, Vadavli (Khu.), Bale, Vaklan, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve and Amandoot.
Gawar Construction Limited was awarded the construction contract, with work commencing in 2024. According to MMRDA sources cited in the report, the project has achieved 53.87% physical progress so far.
A key factor behind the pace of construction has been the early resolution of the proposed car depot requirement. Around 45 hectares of land at Nilje-Niljepada was identified and acquired for the depot, allowing construction activity to proceed without a prolonged delay over this issue.
The corridor is also planned to connect with the Navi Mumbai Metro network at Amandoot. This interchange is expected to establish a direct metro connection between Navi Mumbai and the Kalyan-Dombivli region.
With more than half of the construction already completed, MMRDA is now focusing on accelerating the remaining works to meet its May 2028 commissioning target. The project is expected to provide commuters with an alternative to road travel and improve east-west connectivity across the expanding Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
