Mumbai commuters could see shorter waiting times on suburban railway platforms if Kavach 5.0 is introduced as planned on the Mumbai Central–Virar section by December 2026. The next-generation train protection system is being developed specifically for high-frequency suburban operations.
Unlike Kavach 4.0, which primarily focuses on train protection, the newer version is designed to address the operational demands of suburban networks, where trains run at close intervals during peak hours.
“Its next-generation version, Kavach 5.0, is designed to reduce the headway between trains, potentially easing the daily rush-hour crush,” highly placed sources in the Mumbai division told mid-day.
Headway refers to the interval between consecutive trains. Reducing this gap, while maintaining prescribed safety standards, could potentially create additional operating capacity on existing railway infrastructure. However, the reported possibility of 30% more services is a projected capability and does not represent a confirmed increase in Mumbai’s timetable.
For passengers, shorter intervals could translate into more frequent locals, reduced platform waiting and improved peak-hour capacity. The actual benefits would depend on several factors, including signalling integration, available trains, infrastructure limitations and the final operating schedule.
Kavach provides movement-related information directly inside the motorman’s cabin rather than relying solely on trackside signals. The system can display signal aspects and the distance to the next signal in real time. It can also automatically apply brakes if a train passes a red signal or exceeds the permitted speed, providing protection against potential rear-end, head-on and side-on collisions.
“The suburban railway network operates under intense pressure, with trains following one another at short intervals. Any reduction in the distance between could possibly create additional operating capacity without necessarily requiring new tracks. Kavach 4.0 is primarily a train protection system, while Kavach 5.0 is being designed to address the specific demands of high-frequency suburban operations,” an official said.
Kavach was adopted as India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection system in 2020, with Kavach 4.0 approved in 2024 and Kavach 5.0 announced for suburban operations in April 2025.
The planned Mumbai rollout would extend the system’s safety features to one of India’s busiest commuter networks while potentially allowing greater utilisation of existing railway capacity.
