Mumbai’s Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road project is progressing across multiple locations, with elevated roads, underground tunnels and interchanges planned to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the western suburbs.
The approximately 60-km corridor, including connecting roads and interchanges, is being developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through seven packages. According to the civic body’s update on X, Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide recently inspected several construction sites and directed officials to resolve obstacles delaying the work.
Flyovers and Connecting Roads Take Shape
Under Package B, 11 of the 38 pillars planned for the elevated road between Goregaon and the Oberoi Mall area have been completed. Relocation of water pipelines is also underway.
At Dindoshi, a proposed connector will link the flyover towards Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, being developed under the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project, with the coastal corridor. BMC also plans to build an elevated bridge over the existing Veer Savarkar Flyover near MTNL in Goregaon without demolishing the current structure.
Under Package A, approximately 10 hectares have been acquired near the Lokhandwala-Millat Nagar Junction, where piling work has begun. A flyover is also being constructed across Oshiwara Creek near Bhagat Singh Nagar. Bhide instructed officials to deploy additional workers and coordinate with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority regarding affected structures and redevelopment.
Twin Tunnels Planned Between Malad and Kandivali
At Mindspace Garden in Malad, piling activities are underway under Package B. Officials reviewed challenges involving the garden boundary wall, a high-voltage electricity line and proposed road works.
Two underground tunnels, each approximately 3.9 km long, are planned between Mindspace and Chakpada in Kandivali. The northbound tunnel falls under Package C, while Package D covers the southbound passage. Excavation and piling have started for the tunnel-launching shaft at Chakpada, spread across approximately 65 metres by 40 metres.
Kandivali-Gorai Road Section
Under Package E, BMC is developing a 3.78-km road between the Chakpada and Gorai interchanges.
Although construction is advancing across several sections, the civic body has not announced an opening date for the entire corridor. Once completed, the project is expected to strengthen connectivity and reduce congestion across Mumbai’s western suburbs.
