The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee has approved Mumbai Metro Line 12A, an 18.40-km elevated corridor designed to strengthen connectivity between Kalyan-Dombivli in Thane district and Navi Mumbai.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who chaired the committee meeting at Mantralaya on Tuesday, directed officials to complete the project within three-and-a-half years. The corridor carries an estimated cost of ₹13,856.37 crore.
According to an official release, the metro line will connect Manpada-Katai Naka to Taloja through Kalyan Phata. It will feature 12 elevated stations and integrated flyover infrastructure, improving access to industrial areas and logistics centres across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said the corridor could reduce travel time by 40–50% compared with road journeys once operational.
The project includes a 6.93-km four-lane integrated flyover and an 8.69-km six-lane flyover. Officials estimate that the line will handle approximately 4.74 lakh passengers daily.
Interchange facilities will connect the corridor with other transport networks. These are planned at Katai Naka for Metro Line 12 and the bullet train connector, between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata for Metro Line 14, and at Amandoot for Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1. Feeder bus services are also proposed at every station to improve last-mile connectivity.
The new corridor is expected to ease congestion on national highways, encourage commuters to switch to public transport and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The MMRDA will oversee construction and serve as the special planning authority for the metro route and integrated flyover infrastructure.
The committee has also approved transferring identified government land within the corridor’s influence area to the authority. The move is intended to support development and generate resources for the project.
Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and senior officials attended the meeting.
