Tata Power & BPCL Plan Rs 250-Crore Power Infrastructure Upgrade At Mumbai Refinery

Tata Power Company Ltd. has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) to develop 110 kV power infrastructure at BPCL’s Mumbai refinery, involving an estimated investment of Rs 250 crore.

The proposed infrastructure will supply 90 megawatts (MW) of electricity required for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU), a major industrial project currently being developed at the refinery.

According to a statement from Tata Power, the PRFCCU project has a processing capacity of three million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated investment of Rs 14,203 crore. It is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under execution and the biggest project undertaken at its Mumbai refinery.

Under the agreement, Tata Power will provide 110 kV power connectivity and oversee the design and development of the supporting electrical infrastructure. The arrangement aims to ensure a reliable electricity supply for the refinery’s expanded processing operations.

The infrastructure development is expected to be completed within approximately 24 months. Tata Power and BPCL have estimated a combined expenditure of around Rs 250 crore for the project, subject to the necessary approvals and achievement of stipulated project milestones.

The collaboration highlights the importance of dependable power infrastructure in supporting large-scale industrial investments and improving operational capabilities at major refining facilities.

The PRFCCU project forms part of BPCL’s ongoing investment in strengthening its Mumbai refinery operations. With substantial electricity requirements, the unit will depend on dedicated power connectivity to support its processing capacity and operational needs.

For Tata Power, the agreement adds to its involvement in developing power infrastructure for industrial customers. The proposed 110 kV network is intended to meet the refinery project’s electricity demand while supporting its implementation schedule.

Both companies will work towards completing the infrastructure within the planned timeframe, subject to regulatory clearances and project-related requirements.
