The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its efforts to recover outstanding property taxes, issuing notices to more than 2,500 property owners who have failed to clear their dues. The action follows directives from Municipal Commissioner Kailash Shinde, according to a civic official on Tuesday.
The municipal body has issued 2,008 pre-seizure notices giving property owners seven days to settle their outstanding payments. Another 507 defaulters have received stricter notices requiring them to pay within 48 hours. These measures are intended to accelerate tax recovery and encourage residents to clear long-pending arrears.
The enforcement drive has already produced results, with 182 property owners paying their outstanding taxes. The payments amounted to Rs 14.35 crore, providing a boost to the civic body’s revenue collection efforts.
The NMMC has established an annual property tax collection target of Rs 1,200 crore for the current financial year. As of Tuesday, the corporation had collected Rs 546 crore, representing a significant portion of its target but leaving substantial revenue still to be recovered.
The latest action highlights the civic body’s push to improve compliance among property owners and strengthen its financial position through the recovery of unpaid taxes. Pre-seizure notices serve as a warning that further enforcement action could follow if outstanding dues remain unpaid within the specified period.
By issuing notices with different payment deadlines, the corporation is seeking to put pressure on persistent defaulters while giving them an opportunity to settle their liabilities before property seizure proceedings are initiated.
The recovery campaign is being conducted under the supervision of the municipal commissioner as the civic body works towards meeting its annual revenue goal. The extent to which the remaining outstanding taxes can be recovered will be important in determining whether the NMMC achieves its Rs 1,200-crore target.
Property tax collections remain a key revenue source for municipal administrations, helping fund civic services and infrastructure development across Navi Mumbai. The corporation’s intensified enforcement measures are aimed at ensuring that property owners fulfil their tax obligations and contribute to the city’s development.
