Mumbai Airport Schedules Six-Hour Runway Shutdown For Annual Maintenance On November 19

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will suspend operations on both its runways for six hours on November 19 as part of its annual post-monsoon maintenance programme. The temporary closure is intended to ensure operational safety and maintain the airport’s infrastructure in line with international aviation standards.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which manages the facility, announced that runways 09/27 and 14/32 will remain unavailable between 11 am and 5 pm IST on the scheduled date.

The maintenance exercise will involve comprehensive runway inspections, surface repairs and technical evaluations of lighting systems, runway markings and drainage infrastructure. According to the airport operator, the work forms an essential part of its regular maintenance and operational preparedness programme.

Airlines given advance notice

To help minimise disruption, MIAL has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), enabling airlines and other aviation stakeholders to make the necessary adjustments to flight schedules and staffing arrangements.

The airport operator said discussions and coordination with airlines and relevant agencies began six months before the planned closure. This advance preparation is aimed at aligning operational requirements and reducing inconvenience for passengers.

CSMIA stated that the scheduled work reflects its commitment to maintaining secure, reliable and efficient airside operations.

Mumbai airport’s operational capacity

Spread across approximately 1,900 acres, CSMIA has a cross-runway configuration and a history spanning more than 90 years. The airport handles close to 1,000 air traffic movements each day and is described by its operator as the world’s busiest single-runway airport.

It recorded 55.29 million passengers during the 2025-26 financial year. The facility also serves as an important logistics and trade gateway, with its cargo terminal processing over 0.85 million metric tonnes annually.

MIAL is a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited, which owns a 74 per cent stake, and the Airports Authority of India. The operator is responsible for managing and upgrading the airport’s infrastructure.
