After a wait of several years, the 13.38 km second coastal road project in Maharashtra’s Thane connecting Gaimukh and Balkum finally got the green signal last week. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has given Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance in its meeting on August 10. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,170 crore and is proposed to be built through mangroves.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing both the costal road projects in Thane is in the process of issuing the tender. As of now, Kharegaon and Kopri in Thane are not directly connected by a road due to which commuters have to take a detour of more than 30 minutes to cover the distance. The Thane coastal road will significantly reduce travel time to nearly 15 to 20 minutes, benefiting the residents of the area.
