A protracted conflict has finally been resolved when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation acquired 120 acres of land at the Mahalakshmi race circuit. The State Government’s approval of the property transfer to the municipality, which opened the door for the development of a vast Central Park, gardens, and open spaces, led to the decision.
The 211-acre racetrack’s lease, which was first granted to the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) in 1914, expired in 2013 and was not renewed. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Bhushan Gagrani said that 120 acres of this prime land have been given to the municipality after receiving consent from the state government, with RWITC keeping the remaining 91 acres for its own purposes.
