Why Mumbai’s C1 Buildings Remain Undemolished for Years

If you’ve ever wondered why certain buildings and complexes in the city remain vacant for years, resembling ghost towns, it’s likely because they are classified as C1 structures—extremely dangerous and unfit for habitation. The demolition of these buildings has been delayed due to legal and procedural issues, as well as residents’ refusal to vacate due to a lack of alternative housing.

Currently, there are at least 70 such buildings in Mumbai, representing a significant portion of the 171 buildings designated as C1 structures by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
