Slum Redevelopment: Seven Government Agencies Will Head Up This Project, Despite SRA Work Delays

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday ordered seven government organizations to take up the duty of building 2,20,889 units across 223 delayed rehabilitation schemes, as the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in Mumbai is experiencing delays in its work.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), and Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT) are some of these agencies, some of which have no prior experience in residential construction.

The following will be the distribution of redevelopment obligations for government-owned lands: In terms of schemes managed, MMRDA will be in charge of five, MSRDC of forty-six, CIDCO of six, MAHAPREIT of fifty-seven, and MIDC of twenty-one.

In addition to acquiring private land and granting the required licenses, the SRA will carry out a biometric survey, declare the area covered by section 3(c), and turn over vacant land to MMRDA. After that, MMRDA will choose the contractors and architects, draft planning and feasibility studies, help displaced residents find housing or transit camps, oversee construction, and more.
