To address the problems with air pollution, noise pollution, and blasting brought on by the current construction and redevelopment projects in the city, NMMC has released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The circular, which can be found on the NMMC website at www.nmmc.gov.in, was created in response to complaints that the public and people alike had been making for a while.
To reduce the city’s growing pollution levels, NMMC has asked contractors and developers to adhere closely to the SOP. Regarding the reduction of air pollution, the Bombay High Court filed a Suo Moto Public Interest Litigation in March 2023, and on December 11, 2023, an order was issued. Under the direction of extra commissioner Shirish Aardwad, NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde established a team of experts with the goal of finding a long-term solution.
The committee’s task was to create comprehensive recommendations intended for developers. Following several meetings, the group created the SOP and a Penal Code for air and noise pollution at construction sites. The expert committee approved the resolution with Shinde’s approval, and the circular was authorized as well.
In accordance with the circular, a task force has been designated to oversee ongoing construction projects. The director of the town planning department must receive an updated report from the local ward officer at least once a week until all project sites under their supervision that are undergoing excavation and construction are finished. Shinde has given the relevant officials instructions to make sure that all parties involved follow the pollution control protocol.
