Next month will mark a significant turning point in the historic Carnac bridge reconstruction project as the authorities get ready to start launching girders following Dussehra. It will be necessary to complete seven significant railway blocks for the job. The girders were supposed to be installed this year before to the monsoon.
The railroads demolished the more than 150-year-old Carnac bridge in November 2022. It was situated between the CSMT and Masjid stations. Originally planning to have the new one completed by March 2025, BMC now anticipates having the work done in time for the upcoming monsoon.
The girders, which measure 70 meters in length and 9.5 meters in width and weigh about 550 tonnes, have been assembled by the project’s BMC contractor. In November 2016, BMC released a call for bids to build a new bridge at that site. The new bridge would cost approximately Rs 41.3 crore and measure 70 meters long and 26.5 meters wide.
Due to the bridge’s closure, traffic on alternate routes has grown dramatically, requiring drivers to take detours in order to reach places like Crawford Market and Kalbadevi.
