The Mumbai monorail, which opened more than ten years ago, has managed to maintain its reputation as an unimpressive experiment. Due to its frequent delays, malfunctions, and minimal use, people tended to disregard it as more of a “joyride” than a reliable form of transit.
The 2014 launch of the 20-kilometer-long monorail project across eastern Mumbai was meant to link Chembur with Wadala and ultimately reach Jacob Circle. After six years of delays, the first phase began operations in February 2014, covering a modest eight kilometres from Chembur to Wadala. The entire path to Jacob Circle wasn’t finished until 2019.
The monorail was supposed to relieve traffic and offer a stable substitute for automobile and train transportation, but in actuality, it has not lived up to expectations. Its limited number of rakes, erratic operation, and poorly connected stations have made it difficult to keep commuter traffic flowing continuously.
