Mumbai: WR completes 100+ hours of Mumbai rail block for sixth line, 74 hours left

According to The Indian Express, the Mumbai branch of Western Railways has completed 105.08 hours of the 180-hour block that was set aside for the continuing building of the sixth railway line between Goregaon and Kandivali. Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhisheek noted that despite the 74 hours of work left to be done, commuter disruption has been kept to a minimum because the majority of the work has been scheduled on the weekends.

Officials from Western Railway (WR) have reported noteworthy advancements in the non-interlocking work pertaining to the up and down lines, as well as the carshed line located at Kandivali. Furthermore, the up and down lines at Malad station have had their cuts and connections finished.

Important jobs still need to be completed, though, like point insertion work at Kandivali, non-interlocking work at Goregaon Yard, Malad and the up through line, as well as cut and connect work on the fifth and sixth lines. These will be finished within the remaining block hours, according to the officials.

A 4.5-kilometer section of the sixth line between the stations of Goregaon and Kandivali will be laid as part of the project. Due to space restrictions, the line will now travel along the western side from Malad to Kandivali instead of the eastern side between Goregaon and Malad. To accommodate the sixth line, the current five lines will be reconfigured utilising the “cut and connection” technique.

When the new line opens, it will relieve traffic on the fifth line, which presently manages all trains headed towards Bandra Terminus from Goregaon to Borivali. Separate up and down tracks will be available with the sixth line, significantly improving train punctuality for suburban and long-distance services.

The distance between Churchgate and Virar is about sixty kilometres. At the moment, there are six lines connecting Bandra Terminus to Malad, four between Mahim and Khar, five between Mumbai Central and Churchgate, and four between Mahim and Khar. There are six lines in service between Malad and Kandivali, with the sixth line now under construction from Malad to Borivali. A 9-km stretch of the fifth and sixth lines between Khar and Goregaon was put into service by Western Railway in November, but the missing link between Mahim and Khar is still unsolved because of continuous land acquisition issues.
