A seven-member committee has been formed, chaired by Dilip Bhosale, former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, to address the difficulties affecting religious sites that are impeding Dharavi’s reconstruction.
A government resolution (GR) has been issued, admitting the presence of over a thousand religious sites, many of which are unapproved, in the highly populated area. Another GR, issued in March, authorises the chief secretary to chair a committee of secretaries tasked with making decisions about the enormous initiative. A follow-up meeting was conducted on August 20 to examine housing proposals for ineligible slum dwellers.
Because of the vast number of religious sites, the current committee encountered substantial hurdles. As a result, the decision was made to assemble a new committee led by a former Chief Justice.
The newly constituted panel will focus on either relocating or regularising unlawful religious sites as part of the Dharavi redevelopment project. Aside from Judge Bhosale, other committee members include GM Akbar Ali (former Additional Chief Justice of Madras High Court), Mumbai’s chief executive officer and special executive officer, deputy secretaries from the urban development and law and justice departments, a deputy commissioner of police (law and order), and a sub-divisional officer in Dahisar (member secretary).
