The Maharashtra government, through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), has launched a groundbreaking program to revitalise the Backbay neighbourhood, to transform this excellent waterfront location into a bustling and aesthetically beautiful urban zone. The new BBRS draft development plan was adopted by the state government’s cabinet during a September meeting.
The Backbay Reclamation Scheme (BBRS), which was first proposed in 1920, will not only beautify the area but also create new spaces for recreation, tourism, and infrastructure development, all while solving existing urban difficulties such as slum rehabilitation and traffic management.
According to reports, the present development plan (DP) from 2001 needs to be changed under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, which requires revisions every 20 years. The state government assigned MMRDA to revise the DP for the scheme.
The Backbay beautifying project has received significant support from residents, businesses, and environmental organisations. The initiative, which focuses on aesthetics, sustainability, and community engagement, has the potential to alter urban living in Mumbai, transforming the Backbay region into a model of modern and sustainable development. The project is expected to be completed by 2026, representing a crucial milestone in Mumbai’s continuous development into a global metropolis.
