The reconstruction of Ghatkopar Railway Station, a crucial hub in Mumbai Central Railways’ suburban network, is progressing steadily, with over half of the project already done. The ambitious project, led by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), intends to modernise the station and relieve the congestion experienced by nearly 4 lakh daily commuters. With an estimated cost of Rs 130 crore, the project is designed to increase passenger convenience and infrastructure significantly. The project’s first phase saw the commissioning of two escalators at Ghatkopar East’s booking office on Friday.
According to MRVC, the redevelopment will take place in two stages. The first phase, which is almost finished, included important modifications such as enhanced footbridges, additional ticket kiosks, partial roof replacements throughout the station, and the installation of seven new escalators (both up and down). Some minor finishing touches are still needed, and these are scheduled to be done in the next weeks.
The second phase, which is underway, comprises more comprehensive modifications such as the construction of new footbridges, the installation of 7 escalators (both up and down), and the addition of four lifts. This phase is projected to be completed in 30 months, or by March/April 2027.
According to MRVC, once completed, Ghatkopar Railway Station would be a contemporary transportation centre and a model for urban infrastructure. The project would improve communication between the metro and railway networks, making the station more commuter-friendly and reducing the strain on Mumbai’s overburdened public transit system.
