On Monday, the first girder of the new Carnac Bridge, which is under construction, was launched in south Mumbai, two years after the old one was removed.
The 154-year-old bridge that once connected Masjid in south Mumbai to P D Mello Road was dismantled. This bridge was closed for vehicular traffic in August 2022, and the superstructure was disassembled during a four-day period. Following that, construction on the new bridge began.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Central Railway (CR) are working together to launch the girder because the bridge spans both railway tracks and the city area. The first 58 meters of the girder that crossed above the BMC area were released last Thursday, and the last 12 meters were launched between 12.30 and 3.30 a.m. on Monday.
The 70-metre-long girder weighs 550 metric tonnes (MT) and measures 9.5 metres wide. Civic officials stated that the second girder of this bridge will be inaugurated in December.
The civic official claimed that the complete bridge would be operating by the middle of 2025. The bridge was planned to be operational by the end of 2024, however it could not be built by the deadline.
