How Mumbai’s Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Extension Boosts Key Connectivity

Mumbai commuters have reason to cheer as the much-anticipated Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Extension project nears completion. This critical infrastructure effort is intended to increase connectivity and transport efficiency across the city.

With only 100 metres of suspension bridge left to build, the SCLR Extension is nearing completion. This last stretch is part of a cable-stayed bridge, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) must approve two planned traffic blockages. Once the traffic police obtain these licenses, the installation will begin in stages, carefully following the curvature of the bridge, followed by the addition of suspension cables and road paving.

Construction of the 4.2-kilometer SCLR Extension began in 2016, with a completion date anticipated for 2019. However, several problems, including land acquisition issues with defense-owned assets, caused delays. A recent breakthrough happened when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completed a Rs 16 crore payment to defence officials, allowing the project to progress to its final stages.

The SCLR Extension, which runs from Kapadia Nagar to Panbai International School, would connect key nodes in Mumbai’s transport network. This new route will benefit major crossroads including Vakola, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction, and BKC Junction. The extension is expected to reduce traffic congestion between Kurla and the elevated road at Vakola, greatly improving connectivity in these congested corridors.

According to a Times Property story, with traffic block permissions expected to be granted, the remaining stretch of the SCLR is scheduled to open to the public on January 1, 2025.
