Mumbai’s first water taxi service has been announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. In just 17 minutes, Mumbai will be connected to the future Navi Mumbai International Airport thanks to this creative initiative. The announcement, which was delivered at a Thane election rally, intends to improve the city’s transit infrastructure while lowering pollution and traffic jams.
The water taxi service would make use of the extensive maritime pathways that encircle Thane and Mumbai, providing commuters with a quick and environmentally responsible option. To make the service easier, a jetty has already been built close to Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The water taxi service is a component of a larger government initiative to alleviate Mumbai’s ongoing pollution and traffic issues. The project’s use of waterways provides a sustainable and effective form of travel that fits in with international trends in urban mobility. Water taxis have been successfully introduced in cities like Paris and New York, proving their ability to relieve traffic in urban areas and provide a quicker commute.
The feasibility of such environmentally friendly transport options was demonstrated in 2020 when Kerala saw the inauguration of India’s first water taxi service. Building on this success, Mumbai’s water taxi service provides a contemporary method of metropolitan connectivity.
Gadkari talked on the New Delhi-Mumbai Motorway and other important infrastructure projects during the event. By rerouting traffic away from major cities like Pune and Mumbai, this motorway will facilitate intercity travel and ease the strain on city highways.
Mumbai also intends to launch electric intercity buses, which will offer a first-rate, airborne travel experience. Together with the water taxi service, these programs demonstrate the government’s dedication to updating Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure while taking environmental issues into account.
An important step towards quicker, greener, and more effective urban transportation is Mumbai’s planned water taxi service. The project is expected to transform transport both inside and outside of the city thanks to its cutting-edge features and emphasis on sustainability.
