An important milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructure development has been reached with the recent completion of the city’s first-ever cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road Station. The bridge, which has six lanes and a designated pedestrian walkway, was built just two years after work started on February 14, 2022, making it one of the quickest overbridges to span the rail lines.
The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) launched this Rs 273-crore project on February 14, 2022, as part of a citywide push to replace old bridges from the British era with contemporary cable-stayed constructions. In order to maintain traffic flow while construction is underway, these bridges are being constructed next to the existing ones.
Soon to be put into service, the Reay Road Bridge will allow traffic to flow smoothly via the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass and guarantee adequate space for cars to pass beneath the Eastern Freeway. A bridge health monitoring system will guarantee safety, while the bridge’s architectural LED lighting will enhance Mumbai’s skyline.
Byculla, Dadar, and Ghatkopar are also undergoing construction, and the Reay Road Bridge represents a major advancement in the modernisation of Mumbai’s transit system.
