The ambitious Orange Metro Line 12—a vital infrastructure project intended to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity in Navi Mumbai—should be finished by December 31, 2027. The metro line, which will connect Kalyan and Taloja across an amazing 23.756 kilometres, would offer a smooth transit option for the area’s expanding population.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is carrying out the project, which has advanced significantly in terms of contracting and planning thus far. A general consultant consortia that includes SYSTRA SA and DB Engineering & Consultancy GmbH will manage the project’s design and construction supervision.
In the meantime, M/s LKT-Enia JV has been given the position of detailed design consultant, and their contract will start on November 1, 2023. M/s Gawar Construction Pvt. Ltd., has been tasked with building the viaduct and stations, and their contract is set to run from April 1, 2024, until September 30, 2026. This partnership indicates a concerted attempt to fulfil the deadline of December 2027.
The addition of two interchange stations—one with Mumbai Metro Line 5 at Kalyan APMC and another with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 at Amandoot (Taloja)—is one of the Metro Line 12’s noteworthy characteristics. By providing passengers with simple transfers between several metro lines, these interchanges are anticipated to enhance connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
At Nilje Gaon, next to Vadavali Station, a sizable depot-turned-workshop complex is also planned in addition to the corridor. This depot, which spans 30.12 hectares, will be capable of handling testing, heavy equipment replacements, small repairs, and large overhauls. There will be four workshop lines, three inspection/maintenance lines, and twelve stabling lines. With the ability to handle up to 24 rakes of six-car trains, the facility is built to meet the increasing number of trains.
57 hectares of government land have already been purchased by MMRDA for the depot’s development and associated projects. In collaboration with local agencies, such as the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Panvel Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, and Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, additional land acquisition for areas that are not presently available is being planned. In addition to helping the area achieve its urban development objectives, the completion of Orange Metro Line 12 is anticipated to greatly alleviate traffic problems in the area and enable more convenient commutes between Kalyan and Taloja.
