Deputy CM Shinde Sets 100-Day Target For BKC-Worli Metro Launch

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde says the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli segment of Mumbai Metro Line 3 will start operations in 100 days. This declaration was made following a review meeting with representatives from the Housing, Urban Development, and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) departments, which was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

To prevent delays, CM Fadnavis instructed authorities to create an updated schedule for all metro projects under MMRDA. He established a lofty target of installing 50 km of new metro lines every year starting next year, with 23 km anticipated to be operational by 2025. This year, the Metro-3 route alone will add 20–25 km.

The Aqua Line, which runs ten stations from BKC to Aarey, includes the BKC-Worli segment. This segment has nine underground stations and was built for Rs 141.2 billion. It is anticipated that the entire 33.5-kilometer Metro Line 3, which runs from Navy Nagar in South Mumbai to Aarey Depot in the north, will serve 1.3 million commuters per day and greatly ease traffic congestion.

After it is put into service, the Metro Line 3 corridor will blend in perfectly with Mumbai’s transit system, connecting metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and Mumbai International Airport.

Shinde also went over MMRDA’s pod taxi initiative, which aims to reduce traffic on the Eastern Motorway and ease commuting issues in BKC. CM Fadnavis emphasised the need to research international instances of metros functioning without permanent sheds and setting aside space for future infrastructure during discussions about the Thane-Borivli tunnel project and alternatives to metro car sheds.

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India’s urban transformation, Shinde reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to establishing Mumbai as a fintech hub while speaking at a business gathering in Thane.
