PWD Rolls Out Water Sprinkling For Dust Control On Aarey Roadwork

Concerns about extreme dust pollution have prompted the Public Works Department (PWD) to start sprinkling water on the section of road that is still under construction, which runs from Aarey Market to Royal Palms. This move was taken in response to Mid-Day’s revelation of dust mitigation protocol violations during Aarey Milk Colony road construction, which were seriously upsetting locals and drivers.

More than 60,000 people live in the 16 square kilometre Aarey Milk Colony, which includes the Royal Palms neighbourhood, slum areas, cattle farm units, and 27 tribal hamlets. Excessive dust pollution had resulted from the ongoing road-building project that connected several internal routes within Aarey, especially on sections where water sprinkling was irregular.

This correspondent saw cement concrete dust and stone-crush mixture spilling into the road for 100 meters on Wednesday close to Royal Palms, creating a dangerous situation. The issue was made worse by passing cars, which created dust clouds.

Locals expressed their annoyance, pointing out the dust’s negative health effects. Although the contractor is spraying water in some areas, the area between Aarey Market and Royal Palms is heavily populated with construction debris, which is seriously polluting the air. Breathing is challenging,” resident Shipra Dubey remarked.

“Air pollution is a serious issue, but it seems the contractor was not bothered,” said another homeowner. We hope that the precautions, such as frequent watering, will continue to keep this from happening.

“We have increased water sprinkling on the internal roads to control dust pollution,” a PWD official said in response to these complaints. Construction materials have been stored at one location, and we will make sure they are covered to stop the dust from spreading.

One encouraging development is that the contractor has begun to sprinkle water throughout the area between Aarey Market and Royal Palms, which will lower dust levels and make life easier for locals and commuters. Additionally, the PWD has promised to improve dust management methods and increase the frequency of water sprinkling in other areas.

These actions represent progress in resolving long-standing problems with infrastructure and air pollution, as the Bombay High Court already ordered the rehabilitation of 45 km of internal roads in Aarey.
