To boost cloud computing capacity in India, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed intentions to invest USD 8.3 billion in cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra’s AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region.
AWS stated in May 2023 that it would invest USD 12.7 billion in India by 2030, which includes this infusion. According to a press statement from Amazon’s cloud computing division, “AWS… announced its plan to invest USD 8.3 billion into cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra, to further expand cloud computing capacity in India.”
By 2030, the investment is projected to support around 81,300 full-time employees yearly in the local data centre supply chain and add USD 15.3 billion to India’s GDP. To formalise the investment plan, the Maharashtra government and AWS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
In addition to strengthening our state’s technology infrastructure, this partnership will open up new avenues for innovation, economic expansion, and job creation as we realise our goal of being a global hub for data centres. “We are dedicated to creating an atmosphere that is favourable for these revolutionary investments and advancing Maharashtra’s digital future,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated.
Between 2016 and 2022, AWS has already spent over USD 3.7 billion on cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra. This also covers positions in sectors like data centre operations, non-residential construction, electricity generation, telecommunications, and facility maintenance.
AWS claims that by boosting productivity gains in the Indian economy, enabling the digital transformation of businesses and organisations, upskilling the cloud and digital workforce, creating renewable energy projects, and empowering the communities where Amazon operates, the economic growth brought about by the investment will have a positive impact on the cloud computing community in India.
“With the rising need for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, we at AWS believe that India’s digital economy has enormous potential to flourish for years to come. For this reason, we intend to spend USD 8.3 billion in cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra by 2030,” stated David Zapolsky, Amazon’s General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Global Public Policy.
