Maharashtra Government Pushes Affordable Housing With MHADA’s Ambitious 8 Lakh Homes Plan

Under the MMR Growth Hub Project, the Maharashtra government is stepping up efforts to increase the supply of affordable housing. By 2030, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) plans to build eight lakh units. This program demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing affordable, high-quality housing for everyone and is in line with NITI Aayog’s recommendations. At a computerised housing lottery ceremony hosted by the MHADA Konkan Housing Board in Thane today, Deputy Chief Minister and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde made the news.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik presided over the lottery draw, which took place at the Kashinath Ghanekar Auditorium in Thane at 1:00 PM. 24,711 applicants competed for 2,147 homes and 117 plots during the event, reaffirming MHADA’s equitable and open allocation process. Shri Shinde promised that, while upholding high quality requirements, successful applicants would receive their homes as soon as possible.

He also emphasised the government’s next housing program, which will include special housing provisions for police officers and mill workers as well as rental housing, inexpensive housing, and lodgings specifically designed for working women, students, and older residents.

MHADA used IHLMS 2.0 to provide a completely automated, interference-free lottery procedure that only included qualified applications. After completing the necessary procedures, winners will get a provisional allocation letter after receiving an official notification letter. Over 11,000 people watched the event live on MHADA’s Facebook and YouTube channels to improve accessibility. Notifications via email and SMS will be sent out after the final list of winners is posted on housing.mhada.gov.in at 6:00 PM.

DCM Shinde also revealed that Thane is home to Asia’s largest cluster redevelopment project, which will increase the number of dwellings in the state by thousands. Citing the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar Project in Ghatkopar as a prime example, he underlined the government’s vigorous focus on slum rehabilitation, integration of SRA projects, and resolution of blocked MHADA redevelopment programs.

MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal gave the keynote talk and reiterated the organization’s objective of delivering 30,000 homes a year, with lotteries scheduled every three to six months. After the Pune Board’s recent computerised lottery for 3,662 dwellings, this is the MHADA Konkan Board’s third computerised lottery in 18 months.

He also disclosed that changes to the Development Control Rules (DCR) (articles 33(5), 33(7), 33(9), and 33(24)) are being considered in order to expedite the development of affordable housing under the new state housing policy. Additionally, provisions for rental housing are being introduced.

Mumbai Board Deputy Chief Officer Vandana Suryawanshi, Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board Deputy Chief Officer Umesh Wagh, Chief Engineers Mahesh Jeswani & Shivkumar Aade, Konkan Board Chief Officer Revati Gaikar, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao and MHADA Deputy CEO Anil Wankhede graced the occasion. MHADA Deputy Engineer Abhaykumar Kulkarni hosted the event.

The Maharashtra government and MHADA are establishing new standards for inclusive and affordable housing with their integrated housing strategy and digital-first approach, guaranteeing that homeownership will continue to be attainable for thousands of families throughout the state.
