In order to improve passenger comfort and reduce crowding, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a number of improvements for Mumbai’s suburban railway network, including the installation of new, feature-rich carriages. Vaishnaw described current and planned projects across Central and Western Railways, totalling ₹164 billion in investment.
Reducing train spacing in order to increase service frequency is one of the main efforts. In order to accommodate more trains on the network and reduce congestion, the 180-second gap between local trains will eventually be reduced to 150 seconds and then to 120 seconds.
The new fleet of contemporary trains will have enhanced suspension technology for a more comfortable ride, better ventilation systems to raise oxygen levels, and better acceleration.
Additionally, the present 3,000 daily operations will be increased by the phased addition of almost 300 extra local train services. The completion of important infrastructure projects, such as the installation of 300 kilometers of additional lines, will enable this expansion.
Additionally, Vaishnaw emphasised that Maharashtra’s 2025–2026 railway budget allocation of ₹237.78 billion is a record allocation, 20 times greater than that of previous UPA administrations. Maharashtra has entered into a tripartite arrangement with the Reserve Bank of India and the central government to guarantee the effective finance and execution of major railway projects.
In the near future, commuters will have more comfortable, quicker, and more frequent travel alternatives thanks to these developments that will improve Mumbai’s railway infrastructure.
