The Maharashtra government has initiated the process of acquiring land in a Mumbai Suburban District village for the establishment of a research and training centre dedicated to the life and work of Sahitya Ratna Annabhau Sathe. A public notice has been issued to inform landowners and stakeholders about the proposed acquisition, detailing the C.T.S. numbers, land area, and names of affected landowners.
The acquisition falls under Section 14(1) of the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance & Redevelopment) Act, 1971, which facilitates urban redevelopment by addressing challenges in slum areas. The move follows a proposal submitted by an Authority formed by local hutment dwellers and occupiers, seeking land for public use.
The planned centre aims to honour the legacy of Annabhau Sathe, a celebrated social reformer, writer, and advocate for marginalized communities. By promoting research and training based on his works, the initiative seeks to preserve his contributions to literature and social justice.
However, the land acquisition process has sparked concerns among local residents whose homes and livelihoods are linked to the area. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority has invited written objections or complaints within 30 days from the notice’s issuance, ensuring that community concerns are reviewed before finalizing the process.
As part of the Maharashtra government’s broader urban redevelopment efforts, the initiative seeks to improve infrastructure and living conditions. While the project promises long-term benefits such as employment opportunities, educational initiatives, and cultural preservation, addressing potential displacement and safeguarding the rights of affected communities remains a crucial aspect of the acquisition process.
