The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has promised that work on important bridges, such as Carnac, Vikhroli, and Gokhale, will be finished before the monsoon season begins, which is a huge comfort for commuters. All of the bridges under construction will be opened to traffic within the allotted time, according to confirmation from Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar.
Bangar and BMC Chief and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani led a meeting to examine the status of major infrastructure projects. Bangar stressed the importance of better coordination and strategic planning to ensure that deadlines are met. The unfinished work at Sion Railway Station (East and West sides) received particular attention, and Bangar urged officials to move quickly and cooperate together to resolve any lingering problems.
Bangar emphasised the need for the BMC and railway administration to address public concerns, acknowledging the growing annoyance among locals as a result of protracted delays. He gave staff instructions to expedite the removal of obstacles such sewage pipes, BEST cars, pedestrian bridges, public restrooms, and advertising boards related to the Sion flyover project. He reiterated that the Sion flypast would be finished by December 2026.
The Gopalkrishna Gokhale Bridge (Rail Overbridge) in Andheri has finished its second phase of railway-related work. The bridge is scheduled to be completely operational by April 30, 2025, with the BMC’s approach road construction anticipated to be completed by that time.
In the meantime, construction is moving quickly on the Carnac Rail Overbridge (ROB), which will link the Masjid stations and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Bangar has directed that all construction work be accelerated in order to assure completion by June 10, 2025, well ahead of the monsoon season. The north arm girder, which weighs 550 metric tonnes, is currently in the final phases of shifting.
The new cable-stayed Bellasis Bridge in South Mumbai, which spans Grant Road and Mumbai Central, is also coming into being. The new structure, which was constructed to replace the 1893 Bellasis Bridge, is officially expected to be finished by April 2026. Bangar has, however, pushed authorities to move the schedule forward and open the bridge by December 2025. According to him, 12 blocking structures have already been removed to make this possible, and the remaining abandoned buildings will soon be cleared. Businesses impacted by the construction will be moved to specific rehabilitation locations.
The Vidyavihar Bridge project is also moving forward, with plans to demolish buildings on the east side of the train station and build a new ramp on the west side. To guarantee easy mobility, alternate pedestrian paths will also be developed.
Now that each project has a defined timeframe, the BMC is working harder to overcome roadblocks and expedite development. If these crucial infrastructure projects are completed as planned, Mumbai citizens’ daily commutes would be considerably improved, traffic will be greatly reduced, and connectivity will be improved.
