Sanjeev Jaiswal, the CEO and vice president of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), has instructed authorities to expedite work on 17 slum redevelopment projects being carried out in partnership with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).
Emphasising swift action, Jaiswal urged both agencies to coordinate efforts on key aspects such as slum dweller eligibility verification, administrative approvals, and the tendering process.
MHADA and SRA are jointly working on initiatives to revive stalled slum redevelopment projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Of the 17 projects, eight have already been withdrawn from their original developers under Section 13(2) of the Slum Rehabilitation Act. These include 12 projects in Goregaon, two in Bandra, five in Kurla, and two in Borivali/Dahisar. Feasibility studies are ongoing for five additional projects, all of which are situated on MHADA-owned land.
Through these redevelopment initiatives, MHADA aims to create approximately 25,000 additional housing units. A review has also been conducted to determine the number of homes required for project-affected residents.
Authorities have been directed to act quickly to provide appropriate access roads at project sites with insufficient connections to alleviate infrastructure issues. To expedite the redevelopment process, a defined timeline has also been established for performing biometric surveys of slum dwellers on MHADA-owned property.
