Dharavi Redevelopment Gains Momentum: Land Acquisitions & Rehabilitation Plans In Full Swing

On 6.5 acres of railway land, work has already begun as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. As part of the agreement to first turn over offices and four 36-story staff quarters to railways, railway offices are being built in phase 1. Additionally, 5,000 squatters on railway property must be rehabilitated.

According to SVR Srinivas, chairman of Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd, 15–20,000 tenements will be built on railroad property. 5,000 residential households from approved structures will be relocated here in addition to slum residents who are eligible for free housing. The rest will undergo in-situ rehabilitation in Dharavi.

Of the 47 acres of railway land for which NMDPL paid Rs 1,000 crore, 23 acres have so far been acquired by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Additionally, it recently acquired 21.25 acres of dairy farm near Kurla.

While NMDPL paid Rs 319 crore for salt pan property at Mulund, Rs 58 crore has been paid for the Kurla Dairy land and Rs 50 crore was given as advance for 125 acres of Deonar dumping ground land. According to Srinivas, the BMC has the authority to determine whether or not it would cover the costs of the dump’s scientific closure by its regulations. An estimated Rs 2,500 crore will be spent on the procedure. The land is to be used to rehabilitate Dharavi people.

For the project, 255.9 acres of salt pan lands located in Mulund, Bhandup, and Kanjurmarg have been cleared for transfer by the Union cabinet. But the majority of it is being litigated. people of Mulund, Kurla, and Madh-Marve are also against the evacuation of Dharavi people. The government has authorised the project’s 140-acre transfer in Madh-Marve. Srinivas said residents in other parts of Mumbai need to understand that Dharavi is a vital social project and the objective is to provide housing for all.
