BMC Invites Public Feedback On Mumbai Coastal Road’s Northern Extension

Regarding the alignment of the northern expansion of the Mumbai Coastal Road up to Dahisar, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released a notice to the public. A public hearing will take place when the public has had 30 days to voice their opinions and objections.

Currently, the city’s Development Plan (DP)-2034 marks the alignment of the coastal road only up to Bangur Nagar in Goregaon. However, an extension to Dahisar has now been proposed. Around 60 land parcels between Goregaon and Dahisar will be reserved to facilitate this project. Officials have stated that while 70% of these land parcels belong to the state government, the remaining are privately owned but largely undevelopable due to their classification under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) buffer.

The notice states that the Mumbai North Coastal Road Project, which will run roughly 17.6 km from the Versova-Bandra Sea Link to the Dahisar interchange, has been recommended by BMC’s bridges department. The project will be 22 km long overall thanks to the plan’s addition of a 4.5 km connecting to the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). A consultant’s survey was used to finalise the alignment, and land acquisition is required, necessitating changes to DP-2034.

The remaining 11.4 km of the proposed coastal road from Versova to the GMLR connector to Dahisar has to be amended in accordance with part 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional & Town Planning Act, 1966, even if the 5.6 km part is already included in DP-2034. The updated route will be included in DP-2034 along with its 3.5 km of connectors and interchanges. Wards P-North (Malad), R-South (Kandivli), R-Central (Borivli), and R-North (Dahisar) are among the impacted locations; the road widths range from 36.6 to 53 meters.
