BMC Initiates Land Acquisition For Northern Extension Of Coastal Road

The Mumbai Coastal Road’s northern expansion, which will connect Bandra and Dahisar, is being built on land that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started to acquire. To facilitate the project, the local body has issued a notice to change the reservation status of 60 land parcels along the coastline that are located inside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).

In addition, the BMC has sought public input on the proposed alignment, inviting citizens to submit their suggestions within 30 days. A public hearing will be conducted following the feedback process.

The Coastal Road expansion, which was planned by the BMC’s bridges department, will run roughly 17.6 kilometres from Dahisar to the Versova-Bandra sea link interchange. The project’s overall length is 22 km when the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) link is added.

The land acquisition will impact 705 acres across multiple areas, including Goregaon, Malad, Charkop, Borivali, Eksar, and Dahisar. While most of this land belongs to the state government, some portions are privately owned.

With widths ranging from 36.6 to 53 meters, the alignment from the GMLR link to Dahisar will span 11.4 km. Furthermore, 3.5 km of connectors and interchanges will be included in this length, impacting wards like P-North (Malad), R-South (Kandivali), R-Central (Borivali), and R-North (Dahisar).

The BMC intends to amend the Development Plan 2034 (DP-2034) by Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, to incorporate these changes into Mumbai’s development framework.
