Mumbai To Get Iconic Buildings Under New Government Policy

Mumbai, which is known for its colonial-era architecture, is expected to see the construction of more unique structures as a result of the implementation of a specific government policy that encourages the promotion of famous buildings. Eknath Shinde, the deputy chief minister, said the project aims to boost tourism and improve the city’s aesthetic appeal.

“Mumbai’s architectural charm has long been shaped by British-era buildings. To preserve this legacy while encouraging new landmark developments, a special policy has been introduced,” Shinde stated in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

He emphasised the significance of architectural design and iconic monuments on a worldwide scale, saying that Mumbai, a world-class city, deserved impressive buildings that enhance its beauty and tourism potential.

At present, the city’s Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) impose certain restrictions on design flexibility. To address this, the government is proposing amendments under Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act to introduce special provisions for the construction of iconic buildings.

Shinde added that these regulation modifications have been directed to be implemented by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This action will open the door for the construction of contemporary, aesthetically striking buildings that have the potential to completely alter Mumbai’s skyline for future generations.
