Mumbai Metro Line 3 Nears Launch Of BKC-Worli Stretch

Mumbai’s much anticipated Metro Line 3 project is about to make significant progress as the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) starts final inspections of the second phase, which includes a 9.77 km subterranean section between Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). According to a Hindustan Times report, commuters would be able to board trains on this new route as early as next week if everything goes according to plan.

The Aqua Line, partially operational since 7 October 2024, currently runs between Aarey JVLR and BKC, covering a 12.69 km distance. The latest segment under review includes six stations: Dharavi, Sitaladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk.

“The CMRS team visited the route on Monday, and we’ve been informed that a full inspection will take place around April 10. If everything goes smoothly, the line could open by the weekend or early next week,” sources close to the project told Hindustan Times.

The CMRS will assess structural integrity, track alignment, electrical systems, emergency preparedness, and other safety measures before issuing clearance for public use.

Metro Line 3, which is run by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), is a revolutionary infrastructure project that aims to improve access and reduce traffic in important business districts like Worli, BKC, Andheri-Kurla Road, MIDC, and SEEPZ. When finished, the route will have 27 underground stops with a length of 33.5 kilometres. By July 2025, the last 13 kilometres to Cuffe Parade should be finished.

In addition to business connectivity, the line will also provide easier access to prominent residential areas and cultural landmarks such as St. Michael’s Church in Mahim, the Shitaladevi Temple, and the iconic Siddhivinayak Temple in Dadar. The fare for a one-way trip from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk is set at Rs 60.
