One of India’s most ambitious greenfield infrastructure projects has reached a significant milestone with the confirmation by authorities that airside construction for the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is complete.
All essential airside infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, and associated parts, is now available, according to a report from the Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) to the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
On Friday, CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal presided over a project review meeting where the announcement was made. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) aerodrome licence and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s (BCAS) security clearance are among the regulatory procedures that are proceeding without incident and are not anticipated to be delayed.
Now that the airside work is finished, attention is turning to the terminal structures and landside access. To guarantee smooth operations once the airport is fully operational, testing for Operation Readiness and Transfer (ORAT) is presently in progress. Applications from airlines for takeoff and landing slots have already started, and the DGCA will finalise allocations in the upcoming weeks.
According to a CIDCO spokesman, “CIDCO, as the project’s planning authority, is closely monitoring progress to ensure all deadlines are met. Avoiding any last-minute delays prior to the airport’s inauguration is the goal.”
Additionally, CIDCO is working with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite access routes to the airport as part of efforts to enhance road connectivity. Before the airport opens for business, officials were told to make sure that all landside infrastructure was prepared.
