Mumbai’s Concrete Jungle Finds Its Wild Side This Earth Day

The Maharashtra Nature Park Society (MNPS), in partnership with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), organised a number of environmentally friendly public events earlier this week as a significant way to commemorate Earth Day and the Foundation Day of Maharashtra Nature Park (MNP). Under the direction of MMRDA’s Metropolitan Commissioner, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee (IAS), the festivities sought to encourage environmental responsibility among Mumbai residents.

MNP, which spans 37 acres next to the Mithi River, is a remarkable illustration of urban ecological regeneration. It was once a landfill but is now a vibrant hotspot for biodiversity. More than 125 bird species, 85 butterfly species, 384 plant species, and a wide variety of reptiles and insects may currently be found in the park.

A birdwatching session that brought nature enthusiasts up close with species like the Paradise Flycatcher, Kingfisher, and Tailorbird was one of the week’s events. The history of the park and the significance of native and medicinal flora were further highlighted by a guided nature walk through themed areas like Nakshatra Van.

At the same time, kids from Rishi Valmiki Eco School presented a street drama about the conservation of the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard, and a wildlife photography exhibition with 150 carefully chosen photographs highlighted India’s rich biodiversity, from butterflies to reptiles.

In order to encourage household-level greening, a free sapling distribution program called “One Family – One Plant” was also started with the goal of distributing 500 saplings.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Mukherjee urged greater public participation in sustainability initiatives and underlined the park’s function in protecting biodiversity in the face of urban growth. The occasion acted as a reminder that green areas, no matter how small, are essential to the planet’s and cities’ well-being.
