The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to transform the city’s skyline experience with a new viewing gallery atop the proposed ‘Town Hall Gymkhana’ building, located directly opposite its iconic headquarters in South Mumbai. Announced on April 23, the facility promises panoramic views of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and other architectural landmarks in the area.
Designed as a major tourist attraction and civic landmark, the rooftop gallery will feature capsule glass lifts for access and be enclosed under a striking glass dome. This new facility will replace the existing BMC Gymkhana, which has remained shut for years. A ground-level viewers’ gallery currently exists at the busy junction near CSMT and the BMC building, but the new elevated gallery will offer a much-needed uninterrupted and elevated perspective of the city’s historic heart.
In addition to the viewing gallery, the Town Hall Gymkhana building will also house a civic auditorium, a rooftop cafeteria, and a two-level basement parking facility accommodating around 60 vehicles. Its architectural design will be thoughtfully aligned with the aesthetics and scale of surrounding heritage structures, reinforcing Mumbai’s commitment to preserving its colonial-era charm while embracing modern civic infrastructure.
The BMC has already initiated the tender process for the Town Hall Gymkhana project and has confirmed plans to expand recreational amenities for its employees. A new sports complex will be developed at Tulsiwadi, near the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Central Mumbai. This complex will include indoor courts, a gym, and a swimming pool, ensuring continued access to fitness and wellness facilities for civic staff.
